How Much Does It Cost to Regrip Golf Clubs?

Have you ever felt as though your club did not have a very good connection with your hands?

Like you could almost throw the club unless you hold on as tight as possible?

This is very likely the case because you need new golf grips. Golf grips are easy to replace, and they will make a huge impact on your ability to play the game of golf well. If you have been wondering how much does it cost to regrip golf clubs, we have you covered in this comprehensive guide.

Types of Grips

Types of Grips

The first part of regripping golf clubs is to know what your options are. There are several different types of grips out there, and it is essential to know what you are choosing. Let’s take a look at the types of grips available to players and which ones may work the best for your game.

Rubber Blend

If you have played golf for quite some time, chances are you have a rubber blend grip on your clubs at some point. The rubber blend grips are known for having a good feel but also being a more affordable choice.

The rubber blend grip is not rough, and some feel as though it does not have as much traction as a corded golf grip.

Corded Golf Grip

The corded golf grip is made of a durable and sturdy material that is very strong for traction and grip. If you ever worry about the ability to hold on to a club in tough conditions, this is the grip type to choose.

Corded golf grips can be a bit rough on your hands. For players that like to wear a glove, the corded grip could be a perfect choice.

Multi Compound Grips

The Multi Compound grips are the most popular on the market right now. These are a mix of the rubber blend and the corded golf grip. Having the combination of performance helps golfers get the feel and the control they need from their golf grips.

Many times the multi compound grip will have a different material on the top of the grip than the bottom. This allows the players a place to put their hands when necessary.

For rough weather conditions, the multi compound grips are a great choice.

Wrap Golf Grips

Years ago, a wrap grip was wrapped around the golf club. Similar to how you see grips done on a tennis racket, the same was done on golf clubs. Today’s modern wrap grips are a single piece of material that is installed just like any other grip.

The wrap grips tend to be soft and have a tacky feel. In addition, the way the wrap is designed, golfers can get their hands into the crevices to ensure a bit more control and stability.

The only issue with the wrap grips is that they tend to deteriorate faster than other golf grips on the market.

Oversized, Midsize, Undersize

All of the golf grips available on the market are also going to come in a variety of sizes. Golfers with smaller hands may need something undersized, while golfers with large hands need an oversized golf grip.

The size is just as important as the material and feel of the grip. If you are worried about your ability to control the club face, you will need a golf grip that will help you have control.

Why It is Important to Regrip Golf Clubs?

Some golfers feel as though they could use the same grips on their clubs for years to come. If you play every once in a while, there is a chance this could be the case. However, for players that enjoy several rounds of golf a week, regripping the clubs is something that should happen quite often. Here are a few key reasons to ensure that you regrip your golf clubs.

Control Of The Golf Club

Control Of The Golf Club

When your grips are getting older, they will become slippery. This makes it difficult for golfers to feel as though they can control the club. Instead of trying to grip the golf club harder, the new grip can be put on, and players will again feel that control.

Control of the club includes being able to release it and turn it over at the impact position. This is just as important as the player’s ability not to let go of the club itself.

Safety

For the golfer that is not replacing their grips often enough, it is important to consider safety. If you let go of the golf club, it could fly off and hurt someone. There is no reason for the club’s grips to get this deteriorated.

Ability to Focus On The Swing

As a golfer, there are a lot of things to focus on. These include the grip, the stance, the weight transfer, and more. If you are also trying to focus on not letting go of your golf club, you are putting yourself in a poor position.

There is no reason to be worried about your grip pressure and the ability of your hands to stay on the club. Stay up to date with cleaning and replacing your golf grips, and you should never experience an issue.

When Should I Regrip My Golf Clubs?

As you can now see, it is imperative to regrip the golf clubs. However, this leaves many players wondering if it is time to regrip or if they will need to wait a little longer.

If you are unhappy with your golf grips and their performance, you can replace them at any time. However, some other situations require immediate attention to your grips.

Grip Deteriorating or Ripping

Some golf grips will show visible wear and tear. If your grip is starting to tear or it is worn down where your thumb is supposed to go, then it is long past time to get a new grip.

Sometimes if a grip is starting to show initial wear, a good cleaning can help give it a few extra months, but this is a sign that you need to start considering new golf grips.

Grips Don’t Match

Golfers are finding that consistency across their equipment is becoming more and more important. If your grips do not match from one club to the next, it may be time to replace them.

Sometimes when you purchase a new club, it will not have the exact grip style or type. This is an excellent time to get a new grip in place on your golf club.

Slippery Grip

When a golf grip is slippery, it will make it hard for players to have the control they need of their golf clubs. Slippery golf grips can first be addressed by cleaning them. However, as time goes on and the grips are still slippery they will need to be replaced.

Dirt, sand, sunscreen, and even grease can get embedded in the grip. This is impossible to remove and makes it so you must get a new grip on your clubs.

How Do I Regrip My Clubs

There are two ways to regrip your golf clubs. The first is to hire a professional, the second is to regrip the clubs yourself. Regripping golf clubs is much easier than some people think. Here are the steps you can take to ensure that you regrip your clubs correctly.

Step 1: Gather Supplies

The first step of this process is to gather the supplies you need to regrip your golf clubs. Here are the things that you will want to have on hand.

  • Vice with a golf cart shaft holder
  • Grip Solvent or mineral spirits
  • Scraper
  • Double sided tape
  • Hook blade
  • Rag
  • Grips

Step 2: Remove Old Grip

The first part of this process involves removing the old grip. When taking off the old grip, be sure that you are not damaging the shaft in any way. Use a hook blade to reach under the bottom edge of the grip and then pull it up.

Once you get this process started, you should be able to use your hands to pull the rest of the grip off. Removing the old grip is not hard, but with graphite shafts, you have to be careful that the shaft does not get damaged in any way.

Step 3: Prepare Shaft For New Grip

The next part of the process is to see what condition the golf shaft is in. Chances are there will be remnants of all pieces of tape, and if the grip was in terrible shape and didn’t come off in one piece, there could be grip pieces as well.

It is essential to get the grip wholly cleared of any debris before trying to install a new one. If you try installing a new grip on a shaft with old pieces of debris or tape, you will never get it smooth.

For steel golf shafts, you can use a scraper to try and peel off some of the old tapes and make room for the new double sided tape to be placed.

Step 4: Install Grip

Take your double sided tape and wrap it around the golf shaft. Once it is evenly in place, you can then remove the backing of the tape. Take a bit of mineral spirits or grip solvent and pour it into the golf grip.

Remember that the grip has a hole in the one end of it that you will need to make sure is plugged with your finger. If you do not, there will be mineral spirits all over the workspace.

Once you have the interior of the grip coated, you can then pour the remnants over the double sided tape. Put a bucket under the grip you are working on to catch the extra mineral spirits.

Then start at the butt end of the golf club and start pushing the grip onto your club. As you push down, you will be able to slide the grip on quickly because it is wet. However, this will get tacky rather quickly, and you must make sure that everything is lined up as it should be before letting the grip dry.

Step 5: Wait

Once your grip is installed, and you have wiped clean the excess mineral spirits, it is a good to wait at least 24 hours before using your golf clubs. IF you try to head out to the range right after you install a new grip, there is a chance it could twist or turn and make you have to install a new one.

Average Cost Required to Regrip Golf Clubs?

If you are regripping your clubs, you can expect to pay around $7 per grip, depending on the type of grip that you purchase. When paying to have your clubs regripped, expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $20 per club.

For grip services, you have to expect that you will pay for the material the new grip and then pay an installer to put the grip on for you. The whole process also takes time, and you will pay for labor.

Those who do not have the setup for regripping in their garage or shop will find it well worth paying to have clubs regripped. If you play a lot of golf, it can make sense to set up a club fitting section in your garage.

How Can I Make My Grips Last Longer?

If you are tired of having to regrip your golf clubs every few months or a few times each year, then you may want to do the best you can to prevent them from deteriorating. There are a few ways to ensure your grips last a long time. Keep these in mind, and you will get a much better value from the grips you purchase.

  • Always wash your hands before you play golf. Sunscreen, leftover food, body oils are all in your hands, and they will get stuck on the grips.
  • Each time you do a good cleaning of your clubs, be sure to wash your grips as well.
  • Wearing a glove can prevent harmful oils from reaching the grips and making them deteriorate faster.
  • When cleaning grips, never set them out in the direct sunlight to dry; the harsh sun can impact the grips and make them brittle.
  • Don’t leave your golf clubs in the hot car for days on end. The glue under the grips can start to evaporate, and the grips can break down and start to tear in certain areas.
  • When you get caught in a rainstorm, be sure to let the grips sit outside the bag and dry before putting your clubs away.

Does Regripping Golf Clubs Actually Help?

You can ask any great golfer what regripping clubs have done for their game. They will all tell you that the condition of the grips has a direct impact on a player’s ability. If you don’t trust the connection you have with the club in your hands, your results won’t be good.

It does not matter if you have an overlap, interlock, or 10 finger grip; the connection that you make with the golf club is essential. After all, without the grip, we wouldn’t even be playing golf.

The key is to find a golf grip that is the perfect match for your game and for your abilities as a player.
