TaylorMade Project A 2024 Review: Performance & Comparison

TaylorMade golf balls have always been focused on getting players more speed. The TaylorMade Project A is a new built as an alternative to the tour-level TP5 golf balls.

There are lots of great features to the TaylorMade Project A including, affordability.

As a PGA Professional, I often tell players that the Tour Level golf balls may appear as the best on the market, but they are not necessarily the best for your game.

Project A has what amateur golfers are looking for. Let’s take a deeper look at TaylorMade Project A review and some alternatives in case it is not the perfect fit for you.

Features and Benefits

The Project A golf ball is one of the newest releases in the world of TaylorMade golf balls. In addition to the Project A, TaylorMade also launched the Project S.

These golf ball choices are built for amateur players seeking distance with some feel around the greens.

Feel

The TaylorMade Project A Golf Ball is a three layer design. The fact that the ball is a three piece construction means that you will get a lot more performance in the short game area. Although this is a distance ball, you will have a softer feel around the green.

Part of the softer feel comes from the fact that this is a low compression golf ball. The TaylorMade Project A Golf Ball has a compression of about 40. This makes it very close to the Callaway Supersoft.

Spin

When shopping for a non Tour level golf ball, make sure that you consider spin from the tee just as much as you consider spin around the greens. The spin from the tee needs to be very low for average golfers to get the distance they need.

With the new 322 seamless dimple pattern, spin from the tee shots is going to be quite low.

Compression

With a 40 compression React Core, the TaylorMade Project A Golf ball is built for the slow to mid swing speed player. Golfers that feel as though they can’t correctly compress a tour level ball will feel a big difference when switching to the Project A.

Students often ask me how they know if a golf ball is too hard for them. When you hit a great shot with a golf ball that is built for your swing, it will feel very easy.

There won’t be a distinct hit or a clunk that you feel. If a ball’s compression is too high for your game, the impact will feel completely different.

Distance

The TaylorMade TP5 and TP5x are tour level golf balls. These balls have a 322 dimple pattern that is built to give players ultimate distance.

TaylorMade learned how to change the dimple pattern just a bit but still incorporate 322 dimples to get the average golfer lots more distance.

There is very little drag on the TaylorMade Project A, and this results in quite a bit of distance and longer flight time. The dual core of Project A is another reason the ball is capable of traveling a long way.

It is a large and soft core system that helps keep spin from the tee shot down.

Durability

Interestingly enough, the TaylorMade Project A golf ball is built with a cast Urethane cover. Many of the amateur golf balls are made with a Surlyn cover. The Surlyn usually allows for lower compression and a better feel around the greens.

However, Tour Level golf balls are almost primarily made with the Urethane cover. TaylorMade wanted that type of durability and longevity on this Project A as well.

Price

One of the things that stands out the most about the TaylorMade Project A Golf ball is the price. Most three-piece golf balls will be priced quite a bit higher than other choices on the market.

Luckily the Project A golf balls are priced lower than some two piece golf ball choices. Golfers should not make determinations on a golf ball based on price alone, but the Project A is undoubtedly going to give you an excellent value.

Key Features

The TaylorMade Project A has some great performance benefits, but it is not the perfect golf ball for all players. Let’s take a look at some of the key features that you should understand before playing with the TaylorMade Project A golf balls.

  • Three layer design
  • Dual distance core
  • Impressive 322 Dimple pattern
  • Long iron spin to stop the ball on the greens
  • Soft cast urethane cover

Pros

  • Great golf ball for the mid handicapper
  • Aerodynamic dimple pattern
  • Stiffer outer core for a reduced spin from the tee
  • More distance than other mid compression golf balls
  • Less drag
  • Reasonably priced golf ball for the performance that you get

Cons

  • Some golfers find the outer cover to be a little hard

Not the best golf ball on the market for increased ball speed.

Which TaylorMade Golf Ball Should I Play With?

The TaylorMade golf manufacturer is one of the most well known in all of golf. This company makes a wide variety of products, and golf balls are some of the most well known on the market. The Project A is just one in a long series of golf ball choices for the TaylorMade customers.

Some golfers can get a little confused with TaylorMade golf balls to use because of all the different options on the market.

If you are a lower handicap player and looking for the best overall performance and spin, the TP5 series is where you will want to look. The TaylorMade TP5 and the TP5x will have five pieces and likely give you all of the technology that you need to succeed.

For the newer player that is looking for distance in their golf shots, the TaylorMade Distance + is a great option to consider. These are fair-priced golf balls with quite a bit of ball speed built into the highly reactive core.

The TaylorMade Tour Response series and the Project A and Project S fall right in the middle for the golfers that are mid handicappers looking for a range of performance in their shots. The Tour Response has the distance you need from the tee but still allows golfers to spin the ball a bit around the green.

As you can see, TaylorMade offers a bit of golf ball technology for all player types. The key is to find the one that most closely matches your needs as a player and stick with it!

Alternatives

As great as the Project A golf balls are, they are not the only golf ball on the market that will work for your game.

Here are a few alternatives that are also worth considering should you be in the market for a new golf ball.

TaylorMade TP5

The TaylorMade TP5 is a tour ball built for golfers with mid to high swing speeds. The great thing about the TP5 is that it is a five-layer ball with a very reactive and impressive cover.

The Project A golf balls are designed to be very similar to the TP5.

Long distance and soft feel are both key parameters to these successful balls; the only difference will be the spin around the greens.

The TaylorMade TP5 will have much higher greenside spin rates and, therefore, more chipping and pitching performance.

TaylorMade Project S

The TaylorMade Project S is the partner to the Project A. There are, however, a few differences between these golf balls that are worth noting. The TaylorMade Project A golf ball is a three piece design; Project S is only two pieces.

You will get a mix of spin, distance, and feel on the Project A. The Project S is going to be more about pure distance.

The cover is not the tour level Urethane; instead, it is an Ionomer cover. This Ionomer material makes the ball feel softer when you are chipping and pitching.

Although this is a great ball and priced a bit lower, the Project A still stands out as the better golf ball.

Callaway Supersoft

If the low compression on the TaylorMade Project A helps you feel as though you have found a match for your swing speed, you may also want to check out the Callaway Supersoft. The Supersoft has a very soft feel and a compression rating of 38.

This is only a two-piece golf ball, and it will be best designed for those with slower swing speeds. For players that like a golf ball to be a color other than white, the Supersoft has lots of choices.

The wedge performance on the Callaway Supersoft makes it a high performing ball for the amateur golfer.

As far as price is concerned, you will get this for a little less than the Project A by TaylorMade. If we had to say which was the more Tour Quality ball, the Project A would come out on top.

Conclusion

When golfers need a ball with more feel and precision, they often go straight for the tour golf balls. However, most amateur players don’t need to spend that kind of money on a ball.

All average golfers should consider the ball speed, feel, and driver spin of the Project A by TaylorMade. This ball has technology and attention to detail that the average player can significantly benefit from.

Whether you need help around the green or off the tee, the Project A three-piece ball is a great choice. Sometimes playing with an alternative to a tour ball can save you strokes off your game and a few dollars in your pocket at the same time.
