Best Wedges For Spin in 2021

When I started playing golf, the wedges were the clubs I practiced the most. Since I could hit a golf wedge in the backyard of the house, it made sense to work with it constantly.

However, one thing I continually struggled with was getting enough spin on my wedge shots. After years of practicing, studying, and equipment investigating, I’ve finally figured out some of the best golf wedges for spin.

It only took becoming a PGA Professional to figure this all out!  If you think it’s just your swing causing you to have trouble spinning your wedges, think again, it could be the golf wedges themselves.

Highest Spinning Wedges in 2021

Best Wedge For Spin: Titleist Vokey SM8

Titleist Vokey SM8

PROS

  • Highest spinning wedge on the market
  • Available in many lofts and grind options
  • Maximum control

CONS

  • Hard to choose a loft and grind option as there are so many

The Titleist Vokey wedges were the first wedges I discovered that could actually help me spin wedges and improve my short game. I knew my fundamentals were good, but I couldn’t generate the spin I needed until a Vokey wedge came into play.

The Titleist Vokey wedges have only continued to improve through the years. The Titleist Vokey SM8 is the newest model, and it has some incredible advancements.

The spin milled grooves are built to maximize spin and put you back in control of your wedges.

As always, there are lots of grinds and finish options to choose from with the Vokeys, but you won’t find more spin from any other wedge on the market.

Runner Up 1: Callaway Mack Daddy 5

PROS

  • It comes stock in both graphite and steel
  • Very good trajectory control
  • Most spin out of the Callaway wedges
  • Great feel

CONS

  • Expensive price per wedge

Most golfers understand that the grooves are what create the spin around the greens. Having great grooves on the right wedges will make you a better player. With the Callaway Mack Daddy 5, you get groove in groove wedge technology

This means that inside each of the grooves are even more grooves. The result of this type of technology is more spin around the green, on bunker shots, and even while approaching the green.

The Jaws wedges have advanced head shaping and seamlessly transition back into the irons. These are some of the highest spinning wedges that Callaway has ever put on the market.

Mid handicappers, low handicappers, and high handicapper will find success with the Mack Daddy 5.

Runner Up 2: TaylorMade MG2 Wedge

PROS

  • Helps to create spin
  • Clean leading edge
  • One of the best wedges for approach shots

CONS

  • Not available in as many lofts as something like a Cleveland CBX

Even though TaylorMade is a company that is known for golf ball speed, they do a great job when it comes to precision as well. The TaylorMade Milled Grind 2 Wedge has a very high spin rate and an optimized center of gravity

If you like to have some control of your wedge shot and how much spin you get, this is a golf wedge to consider.

The Milled Grind 2 has a TPU insert in the back cavity of the wedge that will help eliminate some of the vibration at impact. Lower vibration increases the feel and make the wedge an even better choice.

Overall this is an excellent choice if you need to get your golf ball to stop on the green quickly.

Cleveland Golf RTX 4 Wedge

Best Value Wedge for Spin

PROS

  • Very fair pricing
  • Forgiving wedge face
  • Best spin for the money
  • Available in a few bounce and grind options

CONS

  • Feel is not as great as a Vokey

If you are concerned about the cost of the new wedges you need in your bag, Cleveland has some of the best wedges to look at. Even though they are able to keep the costs relatively low, you will still get a club with lots of performance.

The Cleveland Men’s RTX 4 golf wedges come in a pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge, and lob wedge option. These clubs offer maximum spin with their tour zip grooves.

We love the number of customizations the Cleveland wedges give you while keeping the price fair. This is a wedge that you will want to consider getting an entire set of.

Whether you need this for chip shots or for full swing approach shots, the sweet spot is large, and the spin is high.

Mizuno T20 Wedge

PROS

  • Available in the blue ion finish
  • Grain flow forged HD for a soft and consistent feel
  • Some of the best golf wedges for the lower handicappers

CONS

  • Not the best choice for high handicappers

Golf wedges that feel better allow for more control. Professional golfers will tell you that the most essential thing in choosing the best wedge for backspin is finding something that you trust.

If you are confident that you can work the ball with the golf club in your hand, you will get the most spin.

Over time, after teaching hundreds of people to play the game, I have determined that confidence is a huge part of creating spin. The Mizuno T20 Golf wedge feels so good it can give almost any player confidence to improve their wedge game.

The T20 performs very well in wet conditions, has CNC milled grooves, a tapered blade, and a very stable club face. Even if you miss the wedge center just a bit, you will get some great results with the T20.

High Spinning Wedges Buying Guide

Now that you know the highest spinning wedges on the market, it’s time to take a look at some of the factors to consider when making your wedge purchase.

Choosing a golf wedge can be difficult because of the number of options out there. Here are the most important things to consider.

What Makes Golf Wedges Spin?

Many golfers simply assume that when they use the golf club to hit the golf ball, it is going to spin. Although this would be nice, this is not always the case.

Backspin is not the only type of spin you can get when you hit a shot. Depending on how the ball is struck, you can also get forward spin and sidespin.

Getting spin from the wedge requires a descending blow with plenty of clubhead speed. In other words, you have to hit the ball solidly, with the right wedge in your hand. This process takes a bit of time, but it is entirely possible.

Do Blade Style Wedges Spin Better?

If your short game is one of the strong points of your golf game, then chances are the best wedge for you is a blade style wedge. If you struggle with wedge shots, then the cavity back style may be a better fit.

Most of the blade style wedges tend to spin a bit better than the cavity back wedges. However, if you hit a wedge shot properly, the best wedge is the one that feels and performs well.

If you need the extra forgiveness on your wedge shots, don’t be afraid to use golf clubs that offer forgiveness around the greens.

When Do I Need To Spin My Golf Shots?

Golf is a very unpredictable sport. You can hit a shot onto the green with your brand new wedge, have it hit ridge on the green, and roll off the back.

When you have the ability to control the ball around the green, using backswing, you can get the ball much closer to the hole.

Golfers that want to score need higher lofts and lots of backspin to stop the ball in its tracks. Lower lofted clubs are not known for their ability to spin, and that is what makes these wedges for approach shots so important.

What Sole Grind Do I Need To Create Backspin?

Sole grinds can seem a bit confusing for the average golfer. There are many different sole grind options in the golf wedges on the market currently. Luckily you can choose the best sole grind by determining the type of player you are and the conditions that you play in.

Think about the surfaces that you are using your golf clubs on and whether or not you take large divots. These factors are going to help you choose the best sole grind for your game.

Having a variety of sole grinds and bounce options can help make you a more versatile player.

Conclusion

Hopefully, you now feel a bit more confident about your ability to get spin from your wedges. Don’t be like me and hit thousands of wedge shots believing that equipment won’t make a difference.

The equipment you use makes a tremendous difference in your ability to spin the ball.

This is why the Titleist Vokey wedge is such a smart choice for the golfers looking to spin a wedge shot. If you want something with a clean leading edge, lots of spin, and incredible feel, the Vokey is the wedge for you.
