Most Forgiving Putter: TaylorMade Spider X Putter

PROS

  • Great alignment system
  • High moment of inertia
  • X design for stability
  • Good for all handicap levels

CONS

  • Priced a bit higher than other options

If you follow professional golf at all, you may have likely seen the TaylorMade Spider X used to win several golf tournaments. This is a relatively modern putter design, and although it is our most forgiving putter, it also has an amazing feel.

The concept behind this TaylorMade Spider X putter is that it is incredibly stable and easy to align. If you look closely at the top of the clubhead, you can see the X shaped design that helps give your shots a true and end over end roll on each ball.

The head on this mallet putter is 30% heavier than some of the best putters 2018 had to offer. The extra weight in the head will minimize twisting at impact.

TaylorMade calls this a True Path Alignment System, which will help golfers visualize the target line.

We will discuss this further later on, but alignment is one of the most challenging things for golfers to figure out. The TaylorMade Spider X putter is helping golfers to improve putting accuracy.

You know how much we love custom fitting in any club, in a putter that is almost unheard of. Luckily TaylorMade thought outside the box and created the Spider X to have three adjustable weights.

You can set this putter to be a perfect fit for you and your game. You may not realize how much the weighting of a putter will affect how it comes off the sweet spot of the putter; this is a concept worth exploring further if you have been struggling with putting.

So with all of these fantastic benefits, why doesn’t everybody have a Spider X in their golf bag? The problem is that this club is quite expensive.

In fact, it is one of the more costly putters on the market. Considering a putter is a club used more than any other in your bag, this could be a good investment in your golf game.

Alternative #1: Cleveland Huntington Beach Putter Soft #12

PROS

  • Optimized center of gravity for forgiveness
  • Mallet head design
  • Soft feel to develop control over shots
  • Available in a few lengths

CONS

  • A little lighter than other options

The Cleveland Huntington Beach Putter is not the latest release from Cleveland, but it is one of the most forgiving putters we have found to exist.

This is a mallet putter with a diamond CNC milling pattern and deep grooves. Cleveland Huntington Beach has a great mix of both soft feel and stability.

If you don’t like the shape of this particular putter, there are five other designs to choose from. We love this one for forgiveness because of the large sweet spot and the natural alignment it provides.

The large head design is naturally big enough to offer some great lines that will help you both line-up and swing the putter on a perfectly straight line.

Huntington Beach is a fairly priced model that is going to save you some money from our number one choice.

If you need a change in your putting game and don’t want to break the bank, this option is a great choice. Huntington Beach is available in three different lengths, 33, 34, and 35.

Alternative #2: Odyssey White Hot Pro 2.0

PROS

  • Traditional Odyssey insert
  • Older model but great value
  • Classic design good for arc stroke
  • Helps on faster greens

CONS

  • Not the newest technology

The next option on our list for the most forgiving putter is the Odyssey White Hot Pro 2.0. This is a blade-style putter that will look quite a bit different than our other top choices.

If your putting stroke is more of an arc style, a blade will likely work quite a bit better for you. Luckily this Odyssey White Hot Pro 2.0 is an affordable and classic model to choose from.

Offered at almost a third of the price of a new Scotty Cameron, the White Hot Pro 2.0 has a traditional Odyssey insert and a very forgiving sweet spot.

A blade putter will help if you are continually playing on fast greens. This is not a brand new model, but it was probably the best putter 2018 had to offer.

Another feature we love on the White Hot Pro 2.0 is the jumbo grip that is offered. The jumbo grip is featured on many of the best forgiving putters because it helps a person keep their hands out of their putting stroke.

Using your larger muscles like arms and shoulders absolutely makes for a more consistent and controlled putting stroke.

PowerBilt Golf RS-X M-200 Putter

Most Forgiving Putter for the Best Price

PROS

  • Offset design
  • Modern shaping
  • Easy alignment
  • Very low price point

CONS

  • Roll coming off the clubface is not as true as other options

Sometimes you are in the position of knowing your shots are not doing what they are supposed to on the greens, but affording some of these forgiving putters is not an option.

We get that, and that is why we always try and come up with a really affordable option.

Some may call these knock off putters, but this is a legitimate company that makes American golf putters for a much lower price.

The Powerbilt Golf RS-X M200 is a modern-looking design that is intended to help you get the ball on the line and keep it there.

This is a very stable putter with a large sweet spot. The M200 also has a grooved face and a very high moment of inertia. Your shots should come off the clubface rolling straight.

The one downside we can say to this putter is that it is a bit light, but that is to be expected for the price point.

Certainly, this is not a Scotty Cameron, but it is a quality putter that should help you get the ball in the hole quicker.

Pinemeadow Golf Women’s PGX

Most Forgiving Putter for Women

PROS

  • Very low cost
  • Large sweet spot

CONS

  • Not available in a variety of lengths

Not only is this Pinemeadow PGX a putter that offers a tremendous amount of forgiveness but it also is very low priced. Pinemeadow makes a quality series of golf clubs at very low prices.

The mallet head design on this putter gives a large sweet spot and easy alignment as well.

The extra weight in the club head will give you some great feel even if the greens are faster.

If you are a female player that has been struggling with an old blade style putter, it may be time to switch to this player friendly design.

Most Forgiving Putters Buying Guide

Now that you have some great putters to choose from, it’s time to figure out which one will work best for your game. Choosing a forgiving putter does not need to be complicated.

We will break down the things that you should look out for and the things to stay far away from.

Mallet Vs. Blade

Traditionally speaking, mallet putters are more forgiving than a blade putter. The mallet putters naturally have a larger sweet spot. They also seem to make distance control and alignment easier for golfers.

Through the years, blade putters have become a bit more forgiving and have been able to compete with the mallet. If you struggle with consistency and tend to hit your shots too short or too long, the mallet might help you learn to roll the ball a bit better.

Low handicap players like the classic design and impeccable feel that blade putters have traditionally offered.

However, if you look at the professional golf tours, many of them have switched to the less traditional mallet shape putters. When something gives you results and gets the ball in the hole, it really doesn’t matter what shape it is.

Face Insert

Putters are either milled as one piece, or they have a face insert. Face inserts will help with feel at times, but they won’t make a putter more or less forgiving. Face inserts offer a varying moment of inertia numbers, different feel, and distance control.

If you like a putter that makes the ball spring of the clubface, you can find it, and if you want one that is a bit softer, those are undoubtedly available. Face inserts are going to be more about preference than actual forgiveness.

Shaft

With the exception of the Odyssey Stroke Lab putters that pay a great deal of attention to the putter shaft, you probably won’t have too much choice in the putter shaft.

Putter shafts are generally going to be steel and made to make the putter head have enough weight to help give the ball a trustworthy and true roll.

If you are particular about the shaft in your golf putter, you will likely need to go for a fitting or look into the Stroke Lab perimeter weighting putters.

Length

Although putter length is not going to be directly tied to how forgiving it is, if you choose the wrong putter length, your putter will not be forgiving at all.

Many golfers are using a putter that is much too long for them. Your putter being a bit too short is a better issue than it being too long. The majority of tour players are using 34 and 33-inch putters, yet most amateurs are trying to use 35-inch putters.

If your eyes can’t get over the golf ball at setup, the putter is just too long for you. You could be using one of the best putters on the market, but it won’t matter if the length is wrong.

Alignment

Forgiving putters usually have some great alignment lines. In the years past, there would be a small white line on the back of the putter, and that was intended to help you line up a putt sometimes 40 feet away.

Golf manufacturers have realized that people need a bit more help than a one-centimeter line. Many putters will have three alignment lines, and they will help to make sure that the ball and putter head are aligned and that you swing on the correct path as well.

Finding a putter that helps you line up is one of the best things you can do to increase forgiveness.

Balance

You will see many putters advertised as having toe hang, being face balanced, or even having perimeter weighting. The bottom line is that putter fitting has become much more popular in the last few years.

Not everyone has the means to or can afford a putter fitting. The most important thing to keep in mind is that if you are not going to change your stroke, you should buy a putter that matches your stroke exactly.

Price

Luckily just because a putter offers forgiveness does not mean that it is also going to be more expensive. In fact, aside from the Spider X model most of the putters we reviewed will be offered at or below average price for a putter.

Don’t let anyone try to convince you that the more you spend the more forgiveness you will get.

Conclusion

Choosing the most forgiving putter is not as difficult as it used to be. Golf manufacturers have realized that there is really no reason to make this game any more difficult than it already is.

A little more forgiveness in a putter could be the difference you need in your game to get your handicap down those last few strokes you need.

The Spider X Putter, although expensive, is the best putter that we can find when it comes to forgiveness. You will love the weighting, the stability, and the high moment of inertia. This is a putter that is worth the investment.

If for some reason, the TaylorMade doesn’t work for you, Cleveland has an entire series of soft putters that are incredibly forgiving and easy to use.

The Cleveland putters are also priced very reasonably. Between these two lines, you should have no issues finding your next golf putter.
